PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The Valley Forge men's baseball team fell in their first season home game, March 29, against Cazenovia College. The Patriots were defeated by the Wildcats in the double-header by a score of 2-11 in game one and 6-12 in game two.
The Patriots were able to hold the Wildcats scoreless for the first two innings, while earning two runs of their own from
Sam Sheesley and Jacob Moritz. However, at the top of the third inning, the Wildcats Jamie Barr hit a triple to right field, bringing in two runs and started a hot streak for the team. The Wildcats were able to earn three more runs before the Patriots were able to end the inning. While the Patriots were unable to score again, the Wildcats hit their stride in the fifth and sixth inning, earning a total of six more runs to complete the first game.
As game two got underway, the Wildcats were able to get on the scoreboard first, going up 0-2 in the first inning. The Patriots remained scoreless until the bottom of the third;
Mike Fiore came home with a single from
Matt McKenzie, followed by a triple from power hitter
Jared Boothman, bringing in two runs from McKenzie and Sheesley and tying the score, 3-3.
Over the next three innings, the Wildcats brought in eight more runs, going up 3-11. At the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots loaded the bases. Ricky Echeon hit a double up the middle, bringing in three RBI's to cut the Wildcats lead in half, 6-11.
The Wildcats turned a double-play to take out the Patriots lead running and caught
Brian Osteen looking at the plate to end the inning. With one inning left to try and take the game, the Patriots were unable to get the bats going and fell in the bottom of the seventh.
Jared Boothman went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple in the bottom of the third. Boothman earned one run and two RBI's.
Sam Sheesley went 2-for-3 at the plate, earning one run and stealing one base
Matt McKenzie went 2-for-4, earning one run and one RBI.
The Patriots travel to Middletown, Pa. to compete in their next double-header. The men take on Penn-State Harrisburg, Tuesday, April 2 at 2pm.
