Women's Basketball Season Ends With Loss To Chargers

LANCASTER, PA- The Valley Forge women's basketball season came to a close, Wednesday, February 21, as the Patriots were defeated by the Lancaster Chargers in the NCCAA East Region Championship game, 60-77.

The two teams remained close throughout the majority of the first half, exchanging small leads until the eight-minute mark.  With 7:59 left to go, the Patriots held a small lead (24-20) but the Chargers picked up their pace and went on a 16-2 scoring run to hold a ten-point lead (26-36) going into the break.

Three-minutes into the second half, the Chargers increased their lead to 17 points.  The Patriots' effort to make a come-back was unsuccessful as the Chargers held a solid double-digit lead until 5:01 left in the game.    With time winding down, the Patriots were able to cut the deficit to nine points twice, but could not find a way to overcome the Chargers' momentum.

One highlight in the game came toward the end of the second period.  Amanda Compton went up and grabbed her sixth rebound of the game and recorded her 1,000th career rebound!

The Patriots shot 41% from the floor and grabbed 31 rebounds, compared to the Chargers' 43% shooting and 36 rebounds.  The biggest factors in this game were turnovers and free-throws.  The Patriots committed 17 turnovers compared to the Chargers' eight.  In addition, the Patriots went 7-for-7 at the foul line. The Chargers shot 22-for-30 from the free-throw line.

Morgan Godwin led the Patriots in scoring with 16 points, in addition to one assist and one steal.

The women's basketball team finished their 2012-2013 season with an overall record of 12-14.  This season marked the end of a tremendous and historic run for several seniors.  Over the past four years, this group achieved what no other women's basketball team had been able to do in the program's history. They won two NCCAA East Region Championships, made two NCCAA National Tournament appearances, placing 4th and 5th, along with breaking numerous records in scoring and rebounding.
