Lady Patriots Win East Region Championship

Box Score

LANCASTER, PA
- The Valley Forge Christian College Lady Patriots have claimed their second consecutive NCCAA II East Region championship on Thursday night (Feb. 23), by defeating the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College by a final score of 64-48.  With tonight's championship victory, the Lady Patriots have gained an automatic berth into the NCCAA II National Championship tournament, hosted by Ohio Christian University.

After a back and forth start to the game, that saw several lead changes, it wasn't until just under the 5:00 mark remaining the half that the Lady Patriots would gain some breathing room.  With the help from jumpers from Amanda Reich and Aliyah Carr, and back-to-back made three-pointers from Morgan Godwin, the Lady Patriots were able to go on a 13-4 run to end the first half and take a ten point (32-22) lead into the halftime break.

Valley Forge continued to roll in the second half, extending their lead to as many as 22 points just 7:00 into the half.  Over the next few minutes, the Lady Chargers mounted an 11-0 run of their own to close the game to within 11 points at 47-36, with just under 5:00 remaining in the game.  The Lady Patriots would regain their composure to put a stop to the charging LBC squad, and would keep the game out of reach for Lancaster Bible, by again extending their lead.  Junior Vanity Jones would grab the rebound off of a missed LBC free throw to seal the deal.

Leading the Lady Patriots to their second consecutive East Region title was junior Morgan Godwin who hit 6 three-pointers en route to a game high 20 points scored.

Junior Amanda Reich finished with 18 points and six rebounds.

Junior Aliyah Carr added 10 points and 5 rebounds to the team totals.

Junior Amanda Compton finished with just 2 points on a 1-for-3 shooting night, but her team high 14 rebounds, including 8 on the offensive boards, helped give her team additional scoring opportunities.

Senior Keionna Jackson continued her hot streak, ending with 8 points and 9 rebounds.  Jackson also contributed defensively with a game high 4 steals.

In the loss, the Lady Chargers were led by Emily Lloyd who finished with the games only double-double, ending with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Lauren Heliger dropped her 1,000th career point for LBC, and finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds.  Sarah Heilenman finished with a team high 14 rebounds.

The Lady Patriots will be back in the gym next week preparing for the NCCAA II National Championship.  The tournament is hosted by Ohio Christian University, and will open on Thursday, March 8.  We will be providing additional coverage, including information regarding the Lady Patriots opening tournament in the coming days.

The VFCC men's basketball team will be looking to recapture the East Region Championship tonight in the "Pit" gymnasium beginning at 8:00 PM, when they play, also, the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College.  Last year the Chargers upset the Patriots at VFCC in the East Region Championship game.  VFCC will be looking to capture their fourth regional championship in the past five seasons tonight.
